ANTONÍN DVORÁK, Sinfonie Nr. 9, op. 95, Aus der Neuen Welt (From the New World), trans. Zsigmond Szathmáry. Bärenreiter 8472. €29.95.
Does anyone ever really play an organ transcription "straight," that is, without any personalized adaptation of one's own? If so, then the present work may prove a bit heavy-handed with its relentless full-voiced chords and autonomous pedal. There are far too many dynamic markings, which, if ignored, will surely not be missed, and a profusion of sforzando markings that are not ordinarily realizable at the organ. It is true that these simply accord with Dvorák's own original dynamics, but on the other hand, there are no indications as to original instrumentation––nor registration suggestions, nor manual designations. Such a transcription will be useful to the extent that one is willing and able to adapt it, but this is more in the nature of a short score than that of a traditional transcription.
